The Elevations : The ELEVATIONS developed in 1966-67 as an outcropping of The Playboys. This is a brief chronology of the group's evolution from 1967 - 1969. The impact of the draft affected some personnel changes as we lost our drummer, Kevin, to the Army. Enjoy this little blast to the past. Special thanks to Carol Falkowski for sharing her scrap book and to Steve Skarzynski who shot the group in 1969 for a press release. As additional photos are received the site will be further developed. If you click on Page 4 below you can see shots of a reunion of several of the guys in October 2009.

Geoff Muldaur & Jim Kweskin : The Common Fence Point Music series began the first of several concerts in Newport at Channing Memorial Church, the home of the former Channing Music Series. For their kick off they selected Geoff Muldaur teamed with Jim Kweskin. The two are living history of early American blues and folk music. They offer a brief narrated history of the pieces they share and they pick guitar and banjo beautifully. The vocals were strong and a solo, beautifully measured blues piece that Muldaur offered in the second set was worth the price of admission. My own wish was that the producers had provided balanced light as Muldaur was over lighted and Kweskin under lighted. I did my best to capture them and I hope that you enjoy this little selection. Below are brief summaries from the musicians' web sites. "Geoff Muldaur is one of the great voices and musical forces to emerge from the folk, blues and folk-rock scenes centered in Cambridge, MA and Woodstock, NY. During the 1960's and '70's, Geoff made a series of highly influential recordings as a founding member of the Jim Kweskin Jug Band and the Paul Butterfield's Better Days group, as well as collaborations with then-wife Maria and other notables (Bonnie Raitt, Eric Von Schmidt, Jerry Garcia, etc.). He left the stage and recording world in the mid-1980's for a working sabbatical but continued, however, to hone his craft, albeit 'flying beneath radar'. He composed scores for film and television, and produced off-beat albums for the likes of Lenny Pickett and the Borneo Horns and the Richard Greene String Quartet. Geoff's his definitive recording of "Brazil" provided the seed for - and was featured in - Terry Gilliam's film of the same title. And about a performance in London, The London Times wrote, "Immaculate guitar picking was matched by vocals that were rich, and bore out the guitarist, Richard Thompson's praise for him: 'There are only three white blues singers, and Geoff Muldaur is at least two of them.'" A communal-like musical ensemble, the Kweskin Jug Band was formed by Jim Kweskin, who had been inspired by a folk group, the Hoppers, featuring washtub bass player John "Fritz" Richmond. As a student at Boston University, Kweskin would often attend the Hoppers' performances at Cafe Yana in Harvard Square, learning much about guitar fingerpicking by watching the band's fingers. After Richmond was drafted into the U.S. Army, serving time in Korea and Europe, Kweskin began to frequent other folk clubs in Cambridge and Boston. Before long, he was playing guitar well enough to perform English and Appalachian ballads in folk coffeehouses.

Johnny Hiland : Johnny Hiland, a Mainer who migrated to Nashville to teach them a thing or two about Chicken Pickin', Chicken Funk (CHUNK Music) graced the stage at Rick's Music World in Raynham, MA for a concert/clinic. He is legally blind and picks like none other. He's had acrylic nails applied to his right pickin' hand thus increasing picking speed into the stratosphere. His playing defies description, emulating pedal steel with bends the likes I have not heard (as well) by anyone. He does great things for and with handicapped kids through a studio he has built in Maine. He is now touring the world with Hal Ketchum. He has a very gentle and open personality style and was very giving and informative through this presentation. Check him out at his site (http://www.johnnyhiland.net).

Nashville Is Country - 40th CMA Festival : My wife is a country music fan! She grew up on a diet of Elvis and Johnny Cash, nothing else. For a memorable big birthday celebration I took her on a surprise trip to Nashville for the CMA 40th Anniversary Festival (formerly Fan Fair). This show featured all of the biggest names in commercial country music in the LP Field, an 80,000 seat arena - home of The Tennessee Titans. There was also a Riverfront Stage with non-stop music during the daylight hours. Scattered around the city were a dozen other stages with non-stop acts. If that weren't enough, there were also the non-stop honky-tonks numbering about 30 on each side of the street. It was truly a musical system overload. The temperature got down to 95 on one of the days and it was some kind of an experience. From a photo standpoint, I went as a husband and not a photographer, per se. I did not "work the camera" as I am accustomed and my vantage points were often challenged. I was able to get front stage for Roy Clark and one night in the arena for Brad Paisley. I am including some video clips as well so one can feel the energy in the arena. Their quality is shaky but still, WOW! Consider viewing this in a few visits as it represents 4 full days of music from early in the day until early in the wee morning hours.
