Marty Stuart & His Fabulous Superlatives - Highlights
Marty Stuart is living history. Having started playing professionally with Lester Flatt at the age of 12 he has made a life of country music. He is the ambassador and the bridge between what was country music and what is. He is genuine - true to the heart. This show featured selections from his 1999 recording The Pilgrim, which was critically acclaimed for creative genius but was a "box office failure". He has just published a book by the same name which released this week. It tells the story of The Pilgrim and also features many outstanding photos that Stuart has taken over the years. He has documented the greats as he learned to do by modeling Milt Hinton, the jazz great. I told him that I was working to do the same and he graciously said "keep shooting" as he signed a shot I'd taken of him with his B-bender guitar a few years ago.
Marty Stuart is a great story teller. He's perhaps the only person I know who can set up a break neck rhythm on a mandolin and then lay a perfect spoken story line on top of it without getting tripped up. Outstanding!
This show at The Narrows Center For The Arts was truly one for the record books. I enjoyed myself immensely. Here are some select images gathered during the first song and a couple from the closing bow. Enjoy!
