Crash Test Dummies - Highlights
On March 10, 2022 The Greenwich Odeum presented Mo Kenney as the opener for The Crash Test Dummies. According to Wikipedia, “Mo Kenney is a Canadian singer/songwriter based in Dartmouth, Nova Scotia. Catching the ear of noted Canadian rocker Joel Plaskett while still in school, Kenney released their first album in 2012, which Plaskett produced. Kenney is known for their lyrical prowess and engaging stage presence. Called "Nova Scotia's rising star" by The Scene magazine, they have toured with Plaskett as well as with Ron Sexsmith. In 2013, their song "Sucker" won the prestigious SOCAN Songwriting Prize".
The Crash Test Dummies are a Canadian rock band from Winnipeg, Manitoba that performed at the Greenwich Odeum. The band is most identifiable through Brad Roberts (vocals, guitar) and his distinctive bass-baritone voice. I must confess that he was the draw for me to attend and hear him in real time. The band members have fluctuated over the years, but its line-up for this evening consisted of Roberts, Ellen Reid (co-vocals, keyboards), Brad's brother Dan Roberts (bass guitar, backing vocals), Stuart Cameron (guitar and vocals), Mark Arnold (keyboards) and Mitch Dorge (drums, percussion). The band is best known internationally for their 1993 single "Mmm Mmm Mmm Mmm" and best known in Canada for the 1991 single "Superman's Song".
I enjoyed hearing them when their work was on the radio and I was taken by their curious lyrics and the delivery offered by Brad Roberts. They did not fail to deliver to the two thirds filled appreciative house. The group was tight and enthusiastic while Brad’s stage presence is staid, somewhat subdued by rock band standards as the front man. His vocals were spot on and his delivery of the group was very proper, almost clinical. I assembled a few images of the evening and offer them here for your enjoyment . The theater continues to hold high standards for safety as Covid is still in our lives at this time. Come out and catch some live music when you feel ready. This is a great venue to start if you haven’t gotten here yet. Cheers!
