Marc Cohn Highlights
Marc Cohn appeared at The Greenwich Odeum on October 5, 2018 with percussionist Joe Bonadia for a full night of stunning entertainment. Doubling on both piano and left handed guitar Cohn played "all the usual suspects" as well as many others from his brimming catalogue. One that stays with me is entitled Old Soldier which was penned for an Olympic athlete and later recorded with David Crosby who he also considered to be an "Old Soldier". Cohn has an arrestingly powerful and soulful voice. Coupled with his dynamic piano work he draws you in with his verse and rhythm. The color of Bonadia's percussion work was truly as good as I've heard and was offered brilliantly with the support of an excellent sound crew. It's not uncommon that I see percussionists but do not hear the nuances of their artistry. This was exceptional.
Cohn arrived on the scene as a backing pianist for Tracy Chapman in 1989 and then was signed by Atlantic. In 1991 he joined producer John Levanthal and produced his first album which had several hits - Walking in Memphis, True Companion, Silver Thunderbird and Dig Down Deep. "Memphis" was nominated for Song of The Year and he for Best Pop Vocal at the Grammys. Cohn won the Grammy for Best New Artist.
In 2005 he was involved in an attempted car jacking after a concert in Denver and sustained a gun shot to the head. Cohn was released from the hospital after 8 hours and was quoted as saying, "doctors told me I was the luckiest unlucky guy they had met in a long, long time". His sense of humor was demonstrated regularly during the program. On a few occasions when people called out requests he'd say "we like requests" and then follow dolefully with "We don't really like requests". He had his audience fully engaged. Cohn provided 3 songs for his encore and folks appeared very happy with his show. He later signed merch for interested patrons.
This was a night to remember and I very much appreciate the support I have received by the whole team at the Odeum. Thank you all.
