Max Weinberg's Jukebox Highlights
May 16 the folks at The Greenwich Odeum gave me the opportunity to photograph Max Weinberg’s Jukebox. Max is an American drummer and television personality, most widely known as the longtime drummer for Bruce Springsteen's E Street Band and as the bandleader for Conan O'Brien on Late Night with Conan O'Brien and The Tonight Show with Conan O'Brien. On this tour he has teamed up with a NJ group called The Weeklings for a jukebox approach to the show. There is a list of over 200 songs scrolling on a screen behind the band from which the audience selects in groups of 3-4. Some songs performed were not on the list and they pulled them out regardless and seamlessly. For example, for Suspicious Minds, the players were discussing chord changes right up to the count off. Weinberg commented that as a rhythm man, he didn’t care about the chords.
The range of material was broad with most settling in the 60s pocket; Beatles, Led Zeppelin, Todd Rundgren, Elvis, The Monkees, and yes, of course, Bruce. The program closed with an invite to anyone who wanted to come onto the stage for a rousing go of Glory Days. Everyone really embraced this glorious highly qualified cover group from Jersey and made them feel at home.
