ROSAPALOOZA
ROSAPALOOZA
Rose Island is an 18.5-acre (7.5 ha) island in Narragansett Bay off Newport, Rhode Island, United States. The name of the island is allegedly named "Rose Island" because at low tide the island appears to be shaped like a rose.[1] The Island is only accessible by boat. The island and its lighthouse are run by the private, non-profit Rose Island Lighthouse Foundation. Built in 1870, the Rose Island Light served as an aid to navigation for a century, and was deactivated in 1970 after the Newport Bridge was built. In 1984, a group of citizens started the Newport Lighthouse Foundation to preserve the light. As of 2008, it has been restored to its Victorian appearance. Visitors may pay to stay at the lighthouse for a night or one week as keepers.
Brad Rodgers, a Newporter, secured the island for one day for a concert dubbed ROSAPALOOZA and arranged for ferry shuttles as well with a cap of 200 persons. I made the endeavor at about 3 PM and caught the last 3 acts; 2:30 Damn Tall Buildings (Blue Grass from Cambridge); 4pm Lisa Mills - http://lisamills.com/ 6pm Jim Lauderdale - http://www.jimlauderdale.com/ I was able to take a self guided tour of the lighthouse and climb out on the rail for some scenic shots. The event was very enjoyable and relaxing. People were respectful and the kids had a ball running about and blowing bubbles. Enjoy your own little visit here with a couple short videos and still from around the island and in the water. Thanks to Brad for taking on this challenge which was free and open to good will offering.
